Born in 1971, he read Iranian and Indian Studies at Cambridge University, and then lived and worked as a journalist in south Asia and the Middle East for twelve years. He has written for the Economist, Guardian and the New York Review of Books and made several television and radio programmes for the BBC. He lives now in London.
